Dog Walk, Sunday, Feb. 28, 2010

We did two dog walks yesterday as Momma Dog came home from quilt class muttering about triangles, seam allowances, and once in awhile giving a heavy sigh.  She is very proud of her “Log Cabin” block though.  It was something called an “Economy Block”  that had her stomping.  Nemo and I could hardly keep up with her up the back hill.  She’s determined to master “Jacob’s Ladder” today, so we were up on the hill by 7:30 a.m.  Huck went off to bark at Carla’s dogs, while I checked to see what had eaten the bread slices we put up there yesterday.  It’s only getting up to 33 degrees during the day so melting is going very slowly.   However, most of the time I can walk on the crust!  Affectionately, Nemo

“Yes!  Look at that clock Nemo, they’re gone past twelve o’clock and they will be bringing us home a “to go” box.  What do you think it will be?”

“Chicken, I hope it’s chicken.”

“Maybe it will be something from Rex’s Diner!  Nemo,  turn on the food channel and let’s see what’s cooking on there.”

“I hope it’s not squid or something wierd like that.”

“No, it’s lobster (ta da) tail.”

“Huck, don’t start with me!”

We took matters into our own paws this morning and when Momma Dog took us out to burn the trash with her, we took off through the barn and back to the forrest.  Huck said he could smell deer back there so we decided to check it out.  Spring is not really in the air, but we can tell it is coming.  It’s about 15 degrees out, and if it gets above freezing tomorrow, there will be no stopping us.  Soon we will be helping Momma Dog plant flowers by digging in the garden, and we will be going back to the field.  Huck finally ate his cache sometime in the night so at least I didn’t have to put up with pitbull breath today.

Momma Dog has a poem deadline (2/28), and a quilt class on Saturday, so we will have to amuse ourselves for awhile.  Come on Huck, let’s go watch “Have Gun, Will Travel”.   P.S.  Those fair weather cats are walking with us again.  Affectionately, Nemo

“Momma Dog, Huck’s hoarding stuff again.”

“What’s he got Nemo?”

“He’s got an old piece of chewbone, the bite of MacDonald’s hamburger you gave him at lunch, and I haven’t seen my gorilla lately either.”

“Your gorilla is behind the couch. What happened to YOUR chewbone and Your bite of MacDonald’s hamburger?”

“I ate them hours ago.  He does this just to aggravate me.  Why doesn’t he eat things when he gets them like a normal dog?  He growls like a pitbull if I even come near him.”

“Would you steal his food if he didn’t growl?”

“In a New York minute!”

“Gggrrrrhhh!  You try it and your face will match your tail!”

Spring can’t come too soon at our place.

“Huck, where are you going with that cook book?”

“To find Momma Dog.  I want her to help me make Steve Irwin a crocodile birthday cake with lots of green frosting and Red Hots for eyes.  His 48th birthday is tomorrow.”

“Aaah, Huck, Steve is aah, no longer with us.”

“I know that Nemo, but his spirit is still here, it lives in all terriers. Krikey, we love to hunt and wrestle crocs and take the squeakers out of them just for the fun of it.”  Maybe I can email a picture of the cake to his family.  Do you want to help? You can work on decorating the “tail”.   Ha, ha!

We went back and checked out the den this morning and this time we have a picture of the tracks in and out.  Huck is busy looking them up in the nature book now.  He had a field day today, he can run on the crust so he took off to check out the enchanted forest and see if Carla has turned the cows out yet.  No luck, but we did hear him barking way back in there at something.  I stayed and broke the trail for Momma Dog and did a little exploring around the cedar trees on my own.  Affectionately, Nemo

It’s snowing again.  We went out and tried to find Mr. Opossum, but even though we looked everywhere he might have gone, he has found a new hiding place.  Momma Dog has a friend in the hospital, so she is going visiting, VOG has books to mail out, so as soon as Huck gets done practicing his “double cork”, we’re going to take a nap.   Affectionately, Nemo

Thirty six degrees and soft snow underpaw.  We discovered a new den along the trail today.

“Who do you think lives in there Nemo?”

“I have no idea, it wasn’t there yesterday.  Somebody must have dug out of hibernation.”

“How big a somebody?”

On our way home from walking today we encountered Mr Opossum.  Huck tracked him under VOG’s car where Mr O.  immediately fainted, but we were good dogs and came in with Momma Dog and left him alone.

OMG Nemo, what was it?

Rabbit, I think.

Krikey, all that’s left is guts, something has sucked out all the blood. I don’t even feel like rolling in frozen guts.  Do you think it was the bald eagle we saw yesterday?

Maybe, but it might have been the new owl too.  You definitely don’t want to roll in those guts, I think Dr. Watson, we are looking at the lower intestine.

We’d better keep one eye on the sky.  I’m heading for the computer to order a bird vampire protection kit.  It’s enough to make your tail curl Nemo…heh, heh, heh!”

Momma Dog, Huck’s is talking about tails again!

“Huck, how about I throw you up in the air and you do three revolutions and land on one foot like the Chinese pair skaters did to win the Gold Metal?”

“And we would be doing this where?  I don’t see an arena or a pond.  In fact it looks like Siberia out here.”  Even if I did land on one foot, no one could see it, I’d be three feet down in a drift.  Besides there’s my tail to think of.”

“Always with the tail.  You constantly rub it in that I don’t have a tail.  Momma Dog where is my tail?”

“hummmm.”
